Beschreibung / Description:

The hat was built to indicate the work, achievements, hobbies, and interests of the PhD graduate (Christopher Spiess), along with a game on the hat. The structure of the hat is a square wooden board covered with velvet cloth upon a bike helmet, with a tassel attached to the left of the board hat.

Hobbies/interests:

• A miniature model of the PhD graduate doing paragliding (which is attached to a servo motor with constant movement).
• A miniature model of the PhD graduate’s bike.
• A stack of Ritter Sport chocolate, since the PhD graduate likes it a lot.
• Two miniature-sized cats which are crafted, indicating the two cats of the PhD graduate.
• A miniature model of the PhD graduate fighting taekwondo with scientist Albert Einstein.

Work/Achievements:

• Two miniature buildings opposite each other at the corners, indicating the BMBF and BSI buildings in Bonn (where the PhD graduate worked on implementing the first quantum-secured video conference in Germany). There are miniature telescopes on each building which are attached to lasers, sending laser light from one telescope to the other.
• Opposite the paragliding model, there is a ground station and a plane at the top of the ground station. The plane is attached to a servo motor so the plane moves around the ground station (this indicates the quantum communication project between the ground station and the flight project by the PhD graduate).
• The clock next to the Ritter Sport stack indicates the PhD topic “synchronization.”

Game:

• There are two button switches on the buildings and four LED lights next to each building. A 12-LED light strip between the BMBF and BSI buildings indicates the points scored. Whenever a light turns on next to the buildings, the PhD graduate should click the right button. Every time the PhD graduate selects the correct button, the status LEDs start increasing. Finally, when the PhD graduate ensures all the lights on the LED strips are glowing, everything starts flashing

Gold Nanotriangles: from Atoms to LSPR-Based Sensing

Beschreibung / Description

I would like to thank my colleagues and friends for creating this magical hat and being there for me throughout my PhD journey. I will always remember these years as full of adventures, challenges, and laughs.

My PhD thesis focused on the synthesis of gold nanotriangles, which are sprinkled in the corner of the hat. The geometrical shapes show the variety of nanoparticle morphologies I have been working on. The cat and the coffee mug certainly need no explanation, but it’s worth saying that the picture next to them was generated by AI in the style of Van Gogh’s paintings. Devoted to my love for J.K. Rowling’s novels is a crew of their miniature main characters. The bottle of potion № 7 and the sign of Deathly Hallows on the liripipe also confirm there was some magic involved. In the background there are flags of the countries I visited, and of course a picture of the Geoscience Institute as one of the main destinations. A place where we spent plenty of nights playing board games with my friends, who contributed a great effort to the creation of this hat. Which is why I sadly had to censor the content of some of the cards in this picture. :) Right in the middle, on the cupcake hand-made of concrete, a “polar” bear (as a reminder of my fear of wildlife in Canada) with a broomstick holds another little cupcake. In the same theme are tiny baking utensils which I find especially sweet. In addition to my main hobby of going to the lab, depicted with a figure holding a sample tube and a table with a chemical setup, one can find basketballs and a camera which does a click and a flashlight when the button is pressed!

I am very thankful to those who imprinted these memories in time and created such a great reminder for future me, showcasing their love and care. So let us have one more memory together by celebrating and sharing the reward. :)

Overcoming the endomal barrier by pH-rrsponsive polymers

Beschreibung / Description:

Dieser einmalige Doktorhut schmückt sich mit vielen liebevoll gestalteten Details, die sich sowohl auf die Forschungsarbeit als auch die Promovierende beziehen. 
Die Publikationen der kumulativen Arbeit sind als einzelne Bücher gestaltet, die jeweils die grafische Zusammenfassung der Veröffentlichung ziert. Alle wesentlichen Elemente der Arbeit sind in 3D dargestellt, bis hin zur chemischen Strukur der untersuchten Polymere.
Eine Minitur des Titrationsautomaten, an dem einige Stunden verbracht worden, darf auch nicht fehlen. 
Persönliche Bezüge finden sich durch eine Figur auf der Yoga-Matte, Elle Woods (mit Brutus Woods) und einer personalisierte Regeneration von Doctor Who alias Doctor Franzi.

Information Provision and Policy Preferences: Studies on Pensions and Gender Inequality

Beschreibung / Description: 

My hat combines my favorite leisure activities and my research. 
Research-wise, the brim of the hat captures abstracts from my publication and working papers, as well as the logo of the project I worked on for most of my Ph.D., "VHAlt." It also includes a cinnamon roll with the inscription "cinnamon rolls not gender roles" - a reference to my research on gender inequality and my upcoming postdoc position in Sweden. It also captures a meme of rapper 50 Cent and a woman that states "38.4 Cent" - a reference to the gender gap in income. At the top of the hat are elderly women with rattles, which was my most used emoji in the VHAlt project. In addition, the hat contains images of Copenhagen and Milan, both cities I have visited for research stays. 
However, my research life is not the only thing captured on the hat. Around the edge of the hat you can find friendship bracelets as a reference to Taylor Swift, but with words like "Survey", "IIPF" or "JMP", which are part of my Ph.D. Taylor Swift is also shown on the stage. The stage represents my love for concerts, as I have been to quite a few over the past few years. Besides Taylor Swift, you can also see Harry Styles on stage, who I've seen live a few times during my Ph.D. Additionally, the hat shows a BahnCard 100. The hat also captures my sports hobbies, namely a trampoline for jumping fitness and a finish line for running. Finally, the hat shows stamp cards from my two favorite cafes in Jena.

Variationsspektrum von Konditionalität im Deutschen aus der Perspektive des Faches Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache

Beschreibung / Description:

Die schwarze Kappe des Doktorhutes zieren Fotos von Kolleginnen und Kollegen sowie wichtige akademische Begleitpersonen von Jessica, auf die sie während ihrer Promotionszeit bauen konnte und die sie mit vielen hilfreichen Ratschlägen unterstützten. Auf dem Scheitel der schwarzen Kappe sitzt eine typische viereckige schwarze Platte mit dunkelgrün glänzender Quaste. Auf der Platte sind Gegenstände platziert sind, die Einfluss auf das Schreiben der Dissertation hatten: 

• ein großer zusammengeklappter Eierkuchen als Symbol für regelmäßige Frühstückstreffen in der Mensa zum Austausch mit anderen Doktorand*innen beim Eierkuchen essen; 
• ein Gestell mit Fotos von Treffen mit Kolleg*innen, die verbotenerweise auch während der Corona-Zeit aufrechterhalten wurden; 
• ein kleiner Bücherstapel als Symbol für das gemeinsam erstellte und analysierte Schulbuchkorpus;
• ein Foto der Schule von Jessicas Kindern mit kleinen Schildern „wegen Corona“ „geschlossen“;
• die Haustiere der Familie – eine Schildkröte und Mäuse; 
• eine Kiste mit Gemüse als Symbol für die täglich reichlich gefüllte Brotdose mit Energienachschub;
• ein Mini-Volleyballfeld, auf dem ein Volleyball und ein kleines Buch mit der Aufschrift „Diss“ liegt, sowie ein VW-Bulli-Modell als Symbole für Freizeit- und Erholungstätigkeiten, die manchmal mit Arbeiten an der Dissertation kombiniert werden mussten. 

Im Mittelpunkt der Hutplatte steht ein Fahrrad, was täglich in Gebrauch ist, mit pinkroter Tasche am Gepäckträger. Aus der Tasche flattert ein sprachlicher Beleg aus dem „Forschungs- und Lehrkorpus Gesprochene Sprache“, das Jessica in ihrer Dissertation untersuchte.

Titel der Dissertation / Title of Dissertation:
Therapie posttraumatischer Belastungssymptome nach intensivmedizinischer Behandlung von Patienten und deren Partnern

Beschreibung / Description:

Das Zentrum meines Doktorhuts greift das Thema der intensivmedizinischen Therapie in Form eines intensivmedizinischen Behandlungsplatzes mit einem Patienten (im Intensivbett) und seiner Partnerin auf. Auf dem (Holz-)Monitor sitzt ein kleines Monster, das die Sepsis (Einschlusskriterium der Intensivpatienten der Studie) symbolisiert. Auf dem Hut sieht man außerdem die Startseite des Online-Behandlungsportals der analysierten Therapie in einem kleinen Holzlaptop. Dazu gehören auch die beiden Logos „Repair” (Studienname) und „Zwei-Leben” (Behandlungsportal). Im Vordergrund ist die erste Seite der Publikation (Grundlage der Dissertation) zu sehen. 
Neben dem „Arbeitsteil” finden sich auf der rechten Seite des Hutes persönliche Anspielungen auf meine Freizeitgestaltung in der Zeit der Dissertationserstellung – meine neu entdeckte Tennisleidenschaft, die Teilnahme an den Calisthenics-Meisterschaften und meine Freude an kommentiertem Reality-TV (La Polcevita) und dem ein oder anderen PC-Spiel. 
Dass ein Großteil der Bearbeitungszeit während der Covid-19-Pandemie stattfand, wird durch das gehäkelte SARS-CoV-2-Virus symbolisiert. 
Das abgebildete Journal bezieht sich auf einen Insider zwischen mir und meiner Doktormutter (eigentlicher Name des Journals ist “Trauma und Gewalt”, nicht “Krieg und Verbrechen”).

Development and implementation of in silico molecule fragmentation algorithms for the cheminformatics analysis of natural product spaces

Beschreibung / Description:

When I completed my doctoral studies last year, my friends and colleagues crafted this highly personal hat for me. The base is decorated all around with pictures of these wonderful people and the memorable adventures we shared over the years. Prominently displayed on the front is a made-up badge for the “Chief Cheminformatician”, an informal job title our PI bestowed upon me once when I was transitioning between being a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher, and he was searching for a term to describe my role in our (cheminformatics and computational metabolomics) research group.
The top plate of the hat reflects many of my character traits and interests. The street “of my life” starts with a childhood picture of me and a coal brick symbolising my roots in the Rhein-Ruhr area of western Germany, a place which was once one of Europe’s biggest coal mining regions. 
The very best feature of the hat: if you press the piece of coal, Herbert Grönemeyer’s song “Bochum” starts playing (https://youtu.be/Gtd9Bg9S85U?si=iiasVfAmII26FDux&t=46)! It pays homage to the city of Bochum in the Rhein-Ruhr area, capturing the spirit of the region with its opening lines “Tief im Westen, wo die Sonne verstaubt; Ist es besser, viel besser, als man glaubt“ (something like: deep in the west where the sun gathers dust, it’s nicer there, so much nicer than you think). The speaker is cleverly hidden behind the Fridays for Future logo, highlighting my involvement in the climate justice movement in Jena during my PhD.
The street continues around the hat, past the logo of my union (ver.di), a mortar representing my main PhD project (developing a software application named MORTAR which identifies sugar structures in molecules, symbolised by the sugar cubes) in the centre of the hat, past some LEGO figurines practising yoga, a plant signifying my passion for house plants, past one of the nice, homemade cheesecakes I treated my colleagues to over the years, and passing the home screen wallpaper I used all these years (“Dante (He Hath Seen Hell)” by Jean-Léon Gérôme). The street culminates with a picture of me submitting my doctoral thesis, accompanied by my two supervisors, Prof. Christoph Steinbeck and Prof. Achim Zielesny.

Development of a system for computer-assisted structure elucidation of small organic compounds

Beschreibung / Description:

Dieser äußerst kreative Doktorhut „iHat“ ist mit einer Beleuchtung und mit einem kleinen Lautsprecher (Bluetooth) zum Abspielen von Musik ausgestattet. An der Oberfläche des unteren Teils befinden sich sämtliche Fotos von meinen lieben Kollegen/Freunden, die ich glücklicherweise während der Promotion treffen und kennenlernen durfte. Mein Doktorvater darf natürlich nicht fehlen. 
Der obere Hutteil bildet zum einen Sherlock, das in dieser Zeit von mir entwickelte Programm, ab. Des Weiteren symbolisiert der batteriebetriebene und im Kreise fahrende Zug mein regelmäßiges Pendeln zwischen Kahla und Jena mit Zug und Fahrrad. Zudem mag ich Züge. Der „iHat“ weist ein paar weitere meiner persönlichen Eigenschaften auf. Wie zum Beispiel meine Tendenz zu Apple-Produkten, welche hier durch den genialen Hutnamen, einer aufleuchtender Apple Watch und der „Michael Jobs“-Symbolisierung klar dargestellt wird. Zudem wird meine regelmäßige Unpünktlichkeit mit dem Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) und einer eigenen Zeitzone angedeutet. Die kurze Hose mit dem Spruch „It’s always summer in Germany“ meint das Tragen von kurzen Hosen, selbst an kühlen Tagen. 
Nochmals ein riesiges Dankeschön an meine lieben Kollegen für diesen fantastischen Hut!

Development and Properties of All-Dielectric and Metal-Dielectric Heterostructures at Atomic Scale

Beschreibung / Description:

I am so delighted to write about my doctoral hat carefully designed by my dear colleagues, which is a collection of the cherished moments and academic endeavors during my PhD journey. In the center, there is a precise replica of an ellipsometer crafted through 3D printing, symbolizing its significant role in my research.
Recalling my initial days in Jena, I do remember my first exposure to the winter in Germany. The glass dome on the hat bears a picturesque scene of Jena along with foam and cotton to evoke the wintry ambiance. Eventually, I also developed thin films on optical dome substrates during my PhD for various applications.
Then, the intricately depicted graphs show the modulation in optical bandgap resulting from tailoring the composition of multilayer thin films, drawing a parallel to the concept of layering garments to prevent the cold. This resonates with the theme of ‘layering’ both in finding solutions to scientific questions and combating the cold. This perhaps proves that famous saying ‘‘es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, nur schlechte Kleidung‘‘.
Another section depicts my very favorite café ‘Gräfe’ in Jena; where I even spent some time in afternoon day before my PhD defense to have a nice time amidst the stress within me.
Another corner has a paper cutout of Berlin adorned with good wishes for my next transition ahead. The cylindrical base of the hat serves as a canvas for a collage of memories, featuring photos from excursions, conferences, trips with friends and colleagues. 
In addition to my mega doctoral hat, I am honored to possess a unique miniature counterpart; creatively conceived by my colleagues to reflect the atomic-scale focus of my dissertation.
On this note, I would heartily thank everyone involved in the preparation of this special hat for me. I do think their thoughts and efforts really call for a ‘Kaffee & Kuchen Zeit’ together; and it would be of course more rewarding with the prize!

Direktes Fügen von Wafern auf nicht-planare optische Substrate und Messung der Füge-Energie mit der neuen κ-Methode // Direct Bonding of Wafers on Non-Planar Optical Substrates and Bonding Energy Measurement via the Novel κ-Method

Beschreibung / Description:

Mein Hut ist ein wahres Sammelsurium an Labor-Erinnerungen. Die Halbschale trägt ein großes „Wafer“-Substrat, denn ich habe mich darauf spezialisiert, strukturierte Wafer auf sphärische Linsen für optische Anwendungen zu fügen. In der Mitte des Hutes befindet sich ein „Teilchenzoo“, komplett mit: Staubkorn, Metallspan, Fingerabdruck, Haar, Öltropfen und natürlich das Corona-Virus. Diese winzigen Dinge haben mich beim Direktfügen vor Herausforderungen gestellt, denn ich benötige extrem saubere Substrat-Oberflächen. Der drehbare „Ninja“-Stern vorne erinnert mich an ein Experiment, bei dem ein Glassubstrat vom schnell rotierenden Tisch abhob und wie ein Ninja-Stern durch das Labor flog – zum Glück ohne Verletzte. Rechts am Hut leuchtet ein buntes Prisma, das ich im Rahmen eines Weltraumprojekts bearbeitet habe. Hinten findet sich eine Rasierklinge, mit der ich die Füge-Energie gemessen habe. Links meine neue Messmethode, aber als interaktives Spiel, bei dem ein Spruch ertönt, wenn ich beide Schrauben der Schiebeführung unten fixiere. Und vorne rechts hängt an der Kordel (aus Reinraum-Kleidung) ein Metall-Emblem mit einem Insider-Bezug zu meiner Heimat.

Economic Beliefs and Support for Public Policy

Beschreibung / Description:

Das fantastische Team des Lehrstuhls für Finanzwissenschaft hat mir diesen tollen Doktorhut für meine Verteidigung gebastelt. In der Mitte des Huts fällt direkt der Regionalexpress zwischen Erfurt und Jena ins Auge, mit dem ich regelmäßig zur Uni gependelt bin. Auch mein Home-Office ist auf dem Hut repräsentiert inkl. mir als Playmobil-Figur, meinem Schreibtisch und meinem Wohnzimmer als Zoom-Hintergrund (Tintenfass und Feder habe ich dann aber doch irgendwann gegen LaTex getauscht…). 

Da ich laut der durchaus recht zutreffenden Einschätzung meiner Kolleg:innen als Pendler in Jena nur den Weg zwischen Bahnhof und Uni kenne, kann ich den Hut außerdem nicht nur als modisches Accessoire, sondern praktischerweise auch gleich als Stadtplan für Jena verwenden!

Thematisch ist meine Promotion auf dem Hut z.B. in Form eines Papers abgebildet, in welchem wir uns mit dem Zusammenhang zwischen Framing in den Medien und wirtschaftspolitischen Einstellungen in der Bevölkerung zur Zeit der Corona-Pandemie befasst haben. Das Paper wurde für den Hut selbst in einen Zeitungsartikel umgewandelt, ob dabei Framing verwendet wurde, ist leider nicht überliefert. 

Auch meine Leidenschaft für Musik ist auf dem Hut anzutreffen, indem zahlreiche Plattencover in detaillierter Arbeit rund um den Hut platziert wurden. Abgerundet wird der Hut schließlich durch eine volle (!) Stempelkarte vom Lieblings-Lehrstuhl-Café und dem Mittagsangebot des Italieners bei dem wir zu Beginn meiner Promotionszeit gefühlt jeden Tag waren. 

Insgesamt ist der Hut eine tolle Zusammenfassung meiner Zeit in Jena und ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn ihr das kreative Werk meiner Kolleg:innen mit eurer Stimme honoriert! :)

Beschreibung / Description:

In addition to describing work safety and religion as dissertation content, the religious and diverse context of Indonesia is also presented. However, the most meaningful thing was the symbol of the family relationship between me and my two supervisors. Like the photo of the adventure to explore the Klutert cave in Schwelm with Herr Prof. Trimpop, and also my favorite gulas cooked by Frau Prof. Eigenstetter.

Mobility of trace elements associated with natural nanoparticles in acid mine drainage influenced pore- and groundwaters

Beschreibung / Description:  

Dieser tolle Hut wurde von meinen KollegInnen Marcus, Steffen, Caro und Gerit kreiert. Das absolute Highlight ist der sich auf Knopfdruck drehende und leuchtende “Dünnfilmreaktor” (der echte ist unten rechts abgebildet). Dieser ist Teil eines Analysegeräts, welches ein wichtiger Teil meiner Promotionszeit war. Außerdem ist das Testfeld, auf dem ich meine Wasserproben genommen habe, nachgebaut, zusammen mit der Hütte, die oft von Wespen oder Hornissen bewohnt war. Weiterhim sieht man einige meiner liebsten Freizeitaktivitäten: Klettern, Tauchen, Reiten (auf dem Pferd sitze ich sogar drauf!) und mit Katzen kuscheln. Mein kleines Laster Energydrinks findet man in Form einer Monster-Dose, und auch meine Migräne-Tabletten sind zu finden, auf die ich leider oft angewiesen war. Zuletzt sieht man unten am Hut ein paar Fotos mit meiner Arbeitsgruppe, die mich immer an die wirklich tolle Zeit erinnern werden! Danke euch, dass ihr mir diesen tollen Hut gebastelt habt!

Asymmetries in strong field dynamics of diatomic molecules

Beschreibung / Description:

In my PhD thesis, I simulated the diatomic systems in the strong laser fields with a particular focus on the asymmetries arising in such systems. This hat portrays one of such asymmetric diatomic molecules HeH+, where the hydrogen nucleus is the blue ball and Helium nucleus is the red ball. Although this system consists of two electrons, shown by the red and blue beads, the motion of only one electron was considered in my simulation (blue bead moving along the wire connecting two balls) while the other electron remaining on the Helium nucleus (red bead).  The asymmetric laser field is represented by the red-pink wire zigzagging across the hat and penetrates an atom which the precise depiction of the light matter interaction process.
Then, there is eye of Sauron, which watches over everything. Due the resemblance of my name to the dark lord, I had come to known as Sauron among my colleagues. However no evil plans were conjured.
There is also a crate of beer! I mean the purpose of that is self-explanatory. :) Prost!
At the end, I am proud to announce that I have graduated from the prestigious Starfleet Academy, the token of which is on the tail of the hat.

The ecological implications of tyrosine-supplementing symbioses in grain pest beetles.

Beschreibung / Description:

This incredible hat was crafted by my friends and colleagues, and I would like to honour their impressive artistry by sharing it here! The hat tells the story of my PhD journey, interwoven with representations of my personality and experiences. The first thing to notice is that there are two versions of the hat: the larger hat and a tiny hat. The tiny hat is an exact replica of the larger one, a fun tribute to my strange and obsessive love for all things small! Interestingly, after my thesis defense, I was presented with the tiny hat first (I did not know the large one had also been made), and we all had a good time laughing about it! The whole hat is surrounded by pictures showcasing memories of all of us throughout the years.

Another very thoughtful feature is that my colleagues designed the hat to have an adjustable circumference using Velcro. They did this to accommodate my ever-changing hairstyles because I sometimes have braids and at other times a big afro, which means the “size of my head” is very dynamic and depends on how I wear my hair. I find it very moving that they designed the hat to accommodate this part of my culture and being (you can also observe the various hairstyles exhibited on the hat).

A large “wolf spider” can be seen, caricatured to have an actual “wolf face” and a “spider body.” A part of my project focused on how bacterial symbionts enhance the strength of beetle cuticles, thereby protecting them against predators such as wolf spiders. You can also observe various beetles scattered across the hat because I studied these bacterial symbionts in diverse grain pest beetle species.

At the centre of the hat is a model of myself, seated in front of my computer monitors, with my head covered in a red blanket. This part of my journey was dubbed “Red Writing Hood” by one of my colleagues, as I spent several months covering my head with the red blanket in the office and intensely writing my thesis. The screen shows boxplots with non-significant (n.s) results—a frustration we all know too well! Other features include GC-MS vials, a model GC-MS machine, fluon, glyphosate, etc., all representing some of the multidisciplinary tools I used to tackle various questions regarding the role of cuticle-enhancing symbionts in beetle ecology.

Elephants are also quite prominent throughout the hat, representing my love for these gentle giants. The hat also features many things I personally like outside of my work; for example, musical notes hang all around the mortarboard (you’ll usually find me singing and dancing). When the hat is worn and I move around, these notes also move and “clink” against each other. It is awesome that the hat itself is musical!
