Social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram have transformed global communication, allowing us to connect in real-time, 24/7. These changes significantly impact our daily lives and shape societies and democracies worldwide.
For researchers, understanding these dynamics is crucial. We face important questions about online misinformation, digital democracy, polarization, and hate speech. Recent efforts to monetize social data, such as Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter and Reddit's increased API pricing, have made access to social data increasingly difficult for researchers. This trend raises urgent questions about the freedom and ownership of social data.
To explore these critical issues, we invite you to our symposium, “Liberty and Ownership of Social Data,” on September 4, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the IAAC Lecture Theatre (Humboldtstraße 8, 07743 Jena). The symposium is free of charge and will also be available online (after registration, see below). It will conclude with a podium discussion (in German) at 4 p.m. on the topic “Battleground social media – Wem gehören unsere Daten und wer entscheidet darüber?”) to which interested members of the public are very welcome.
