Sustainable mobility
The Green Office supports various campaigns and projects relating to sustainable mobility. For example:
Stadtradeln (City Cycling)
The campaign STADTRADLEN JenaExternal link took place from 30 August to 19 September 2024. We founded the ‘Team University of Jena’ and invited all members and affiliates of the university to take part.
Bicycle repair day
At the beginning of every semester, we organise a bicycle repair day together with the ADFC Jena-Saaletal on the Ernst-Abbe-Platz campus. The next date will be at the Beginning of the summer semester 2025.
"Jenarad" bike sharing initiative
We are currently supporting the free bike-sharing initiative "Jenarad", which is run by Fabian Monheim on a voluntary basis and is now getting back on track after a start-up phase a few years ago. In the project, Fabian makes old, discarded bicycles roadworthy and fit to ride again and makes them available for hire free of charge via a WebsiteExternal link. The Green Office supports the project by providing new stickers for labelling the rental bikes.
Organization of the Senate Working Group on Sustainability
The Senate Working Group on Sustainability meets every two months to discuss new developments and strategic aspects in the area of sustainability at our university. The Green Office is responsible for the preparation of the meetings.
Restructuring of the Ernst-Abbe-Platz
Ernst-Abbe-Platz is a central place for students in Jena. In the summer months, however, it overheats a lot and offers little quality of stay. As part of the federal program "Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change", the Ernst-Abbe-Platz shall be redesigned. The wishes and needs of university members are to be given special consideration. In cooperation with the city of Jena and the Department of Construction and Facility Management, we are currently working on a participation process for the university members.
Nesting boxes on the university campus
Birds are an important part of our ecosystem. For example, they help regulate the insect population. Currently, almost half of the breeding birds living in Germany are endangered. The Friends and Patrons of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena donated 30 nesting boxes to provide a safe nesting place for endangered bird species. These will be attached to trees in the botanical garden.
