The Abbe School of Photonics (ASP), founded in 2008, represents an academic education centre for modern optics and photonics at highest international standards. ASP encompasses and coordinates all optics and photonics education activities at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena as well as the local Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, the Helmholtz Institute Jena and the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies.

ASP's training program is comprises several international Master programs as well as a structured doctoral program. Cutting edge research is provided in more than 12 university institutes, three non-university research institutes and more than 20 partnering photonics companies. Thus, research thrusts are covering both fundamental scientific aspects as well as applied engineering in major sectors of the global photonics economy. ASP's doctoral program acts as umbrella for all local doctoral students working in optics and photonics research. The underlying qualification concept is strictly research-oriented and constitutes a major element within the research efforts of all partners. ASP's doctoral program is strictly bound to the principles of academic freedom, fair competition and internationalization.
