Research Training Group of Center for Sepsis Control and Care

The Center for Sepsis Control and Care (CSCC) is an independent, interdisciplinary research center at the Jena University Hospital (JUH) that addresses research and treatment of sepsis and related complications. Research tackles all aspects of the syndrome, ranging from risk assessment and prevention to acute care and rehabilitation. Increasing resistances and difficult-to-treat infections enormously challenge research regarding prevention, infection control, and acute therapy. Translational research focuses on signal transduction pathways, whose dysregulation may entail tissue and organ damage, to identify novel treatment options. To elucidate causes of long-term sequelae of sepsis and to optimize post-acute care are further topics on the center's research agenda.

A key aim of the CSCC is the promotion of young scientists, in particular clinician scientists. The research training group (RTG) of the CSCC was thus established to provide a framework for structured training and mentoring of junior researchers within the CSCC. As a rarity in the German academic system, PhD and MD students are trained together in lectures and methods courses. Special emphasis is placed on translational aspects of sepsis research. Moreover, the center aims to highlight career options in academic medicine and clinical research. In this regard, PhD and MD students are supported on their career paths by active mentoring. The CSCC RTG is open to all PhD and MD students working in CSCC research groups, irrespective of individual funding, as long as the thesis topic is related to sepsis research or infection medicine.

The CSCC RTG is organized under the umbrella of the Jena School for Molecular Medicine (JSMM), a member of the Jena Graduate Academy (JGA). Thereby, the RTG enables exchange with other research training groups and the participation in the multidisciplinary qualification program of the Graduate Academy.

How can I become a doctoral candidate? What is the method of selection?
Doctoral candidates from CSCC research groups may become members of the CSCC RTG, provided that the thesis topic is related to sepsis or infection medicine. Scholarships for MD candidates are awarded twice a year. Applications are assessed by an internal review board and the CSCC board of directors.

Are there fixed dates to apply?
Medical students may apply according to the calls published twice a year. The project start is possible each winter or summer term.

Are there possibilities to be funded in this programme?
Scholarships for MD candidates are awarded twice a year. Openings for PhD students are merely available occasionally.
