The House for Early Career Researchers is the central point of contact for early career researchers at Friedrich Schiller University. Here, doctoral candidates and postdocs will find service, consulting, and training opportunities - all under one roof. It is located in the historic building "Zur Rosen". 

The House for Early Career Researchers is home to the Welcome and Service Desk for Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs, to the office of the Graduate Academy, event and meeting rooms and a cafeteria of the Studierendenwerk. With the establishment of this centrally located and prestigious house the Friedrich-Schiller-University illustrates the value it gives to the support, training and networking of doctoral candidates and postdocs.

Stiftung MercatorExternal link, which is one of Germany's largest foundations for better educational opportunities in schools and universities, supported the expansion and improvement of the work of the Graduate Academy for early career researchers at Friedrich Schiller University Jena with a five-year funding.

  • Cafeteria Zur Rosen

    Cafeteria "Zur Rosen", run by the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, is located on the ground floor of the House for Early Career Researchers. After the building's restoration between 2008 and 2011, a small restaurant was constructed in these rooms. It is one of the oldest student restaurants in Germany: for almost 450 years, these rooms have been used for student gastronomy.     The modern Cafeteria "Zur Rosen" is open from Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. In the main dining area, there is room for 40 guests and in the cellar, there is room for 28 additional guests. In the summer, 40 more guests can be served on the terrace.

    On the first floor of the House for Early Career Researchers, there is a historic wooden parlor. This parlor from the year 1430 is one of the oldest rooms in Jena. During the restoration of the building between 2008 and 2011, the parlor could almost completely be restored to its original state.     The historic parlor can be used by young researchers in Jena as a meeting room for 10 to 14 people.

  • Conference room Auditorium

    There is a multi-purpose auditorium on the first floor of the House for Early Career Researchers. Originally, there was a large wooden parlor in this room, but during restoration, only one side of it could be retained. Beginning in 1955, there was a restaurant for professors in this room, the "Professors' Casino". Additional information on the history of the building "Zur Rosen" can be found herepdf, 1 mb.

    Today, the auditorium can be used for events for doctoral candidates, such as lectures and workshops. There is room for up to 80 people, and the room is equipped with a laptop, projector, flip chart, bulletin boards, and standing desk.

    The offices of the Graduate Academy and of the UniWiND/German University Association of Advanced Graduate TrainingExternal link (GUAT) are located on the second floor and top floor.

    Until the restoration of the building, these rooms were originally apartments for professors. Between 2008 and 2011, these rooms were reconstructed to their original state as much as was possible and were turned into office spaces.
