What are we looking for in prospective students?

General requirements:

  • University entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur): This entitles you to study all degree programmes at all institutions of higher education. You can obtain a university entrance qualification at grammar schools, vocational grammar schools, adult education centres or preparatory colleges.
  • University entrance qualification for a specific subject (not an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences)

However, you can also study without a university entrance qualification, e.g. with a:

  • master craftsman’s diploma;
  • qualification as a state-certified technician;
  • qualification as a state-certified business economist; or
  • pathway programme.

Requirements for specific subjects:

You have to meet additional criteria to apply for a place on some degree programmes. You can find more information in our range of degree programmes.

  • Aptitude test for Art, Music, Musicology and Sports
  • Pre-study work placements and internships
  • Knowledge of modern foreign languages and/or ancient languages: Some subjects require foreign language skills. If you have not learned the relevant languages before university, you can generally acquire the required knowledge during your first four semesters.

How can I apply for a place at university?

What does it mean if a degree programme has ‘no admission restrictions’?

A whole range of degree programmes have no admission restrictions. This means that there are enough places available in that subject at the University. If you meet all the general and subject-specific requirements, you can enrol in subjects with no admission restrictions and you will be guaranteed a place at the University.

What does it mean if a degree programme has ‘admission restrictions’?

When it comes to very popular subjects, there are often more people interested than there are places available. For this reason, admission restrictions are introduced (e.g. Numerus clausus = NC). If a degree programme is subject to our own admission restrictions, you can apply for a place via the Friedolin 2.0 application portalExternal link. The places are allocated as part of the ‘dialogue-oriented service procedure’ (DoSV) on hochschulstart.deExternal link. This is a platform that takes care of coordinating applications and admission offers for degree programmes with admission restrictions. The DoSV portal is also used to process applications and centrally allocate places on Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy degree programmes, which are subject to national admission restrictions.

Once you have submitted your application, we will send you notifications to let you know whether you have been granted admission. If you receive a positive reply, you can confirm your acceptance of the study place by enrolling at the University.
