In addition to participating in individual workshops, there is also the possibility of acquiring certificates for attending several courses. The Graduate Academy offers four certificate programmes, the Service Centre LehreLernen offers three certificate programmes and there is also a programme for tenure-track professors and junior research group leaders.

Certificate programmes of Graduate Academy

The Graduate Academy offers four certificate programmes: "Leadership in Academia" ("Führung in der Wissenschaft"), "Leadership in Industry and Society" ("Führung in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft"), "Science Management" ("Wissenschaftsmanagement") and "Startup-Management" ("Gründungsmanagement"). With the help of these programmes, young researchers may enhance their professional profiles for a future within or outside academia, and in today's society.

These certificates contain six workshops each, which can be selected individually out of specific contentual areas. Participants will be given preference in enrolling in the courses. Workshops that were already attended at Graduate Academy may be credited.

  • Leadership in Academia

    People who plan to work in a leading position in academia require a set of generic skills in addition to expert knowledge and research expertise. Competences in communication, management and leadership is expected of a leader in academia. It also requires foresight, a sense of responsibility and the ability to cooperate across subjects to successfully do the job. In order to further develop these abilities, the Graduate Academy is offering the certificate programme "Leadership in Academia".

    Target group:
    The programme "Leadership in Academia" addresses excellent researchers as of their PhD who are aspiring to a professorship. Only a maximum of 12 people per year are accepted in the certificate programme. The courses are offered in German language.

    Contentual focus areas:
    The main focus is on "Fundamental questions of sciences and humanities" (3 workshops), "Communication, leadership and management" (2 workshops) and "Career planning and job application" (1 workshop).     Scope and duration:
    The programme comprises six workshops. It begins in the winter term and can be completed in two to four terms.

    Costs
    You only have to pay the service charges for the individual workshops (between 10 and 30 € per workshop). There will be no additional costs.

  • Leadership in Industry and Society

    People who plan to work in leading positions outside academia require a set of generic skills in addition to technical expertise. Especially important are management and leadership competencies as well as the abilitiy to communicate with people from different professional backgrounds. Depending on the targeted occupational field the basic knowledge of business, intercultural competence or abilities regarding public relations work or scientific communication can be helpful. The definition of the own career goals and a professional job application also belong to the requirements of a career outside university.

    In order to further develop these abilities and to be able to verify the individual set of skills to a possible employer, the Graduate Academy is offering the certificate programme "Leadership in Industry and Society".

    Target group:
    The programme addresses German and international doctoral candidates and postdocs who aim at a career outside university. Only a maximum of 16 people per year are accepted in the certificate programme. The certificate language can be either German or English.

    Contentual focus areas:
    The main focus is on "Communication, Leadership and Management" (3 workshops) and "Career Planning and Job Application" (1 workshop), supplemented by one elective (2 workshops).   • Science Management

    If you want to succeed in the area of science management, comprehensive social and management skills often become more important than your own area of research. Science managers have to be able to understand the German academic system and the characteristics of a broad variety of scientific disciplines. They should have outstanding abilities in personal and public communication, as well as in project management. Depending on the future working field, science managers also need knowledge in the areas of external project funding, publication strategies, and the handling of research data, as well as in the field of scientific evaluation methods (statistics, surveys).

    If you plan to aquire a basic qualification for coordinator positions of graduate institutions and research clusters, faculty director, or other leading positions in university administration, you can now take part in the Graduate Academy's "Science Management" certificate programme.

    Target group:
    The programme is directed at doctoral candidates and postdocs of Friedrich Schiller University, who are already working in a science management position or want to prepare for a career in this field. The maximum number of participants accepted is 8 p.a. The programme language is German. 

    Main focus areas:
    The main focus is on "Fundamental Questions of Sciences and Humanities " (2 workshops) and "Communication, Leadership, and Management" (2 workshops).   • Start-up Management

    Can you imagine to start your own business with your academic skills or to commercialise your own research results in an entrepreneurial way?

    If you are interested in self-employment or setting up your own business, you need not only subject-related expertise but also a business idea and basic knowledge in the areas of business start-ups, entrepreneurship and business administration. Management and leadership skills as well as the ability to communicate clearly and comprehensibly with people from different professional backgrounds are also important.

    In order to evaluate the opportunities and risks of setting up a business and to further develop the necessary skills, the Graduate Academy in cooperation with the "Gründerservice K1"External link of Jena University offers the certificate programme "Start-up Management".

    Target group
    The programme addresses German and international doctoral researchers and postdocs who are interested in self-employment and business start-ups. A maximum of 8 persons per year are admitted to the programme. The certificate language can be either German or English.

    Contentual focus areas
    The main focus is on the areas of "Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship" (2 workshops) and "Communication, Leadership and Management" (2 workshops). There is also a thematically open elective field (2 workshops). For each area, different workshops are available in German and English. Certificate programmes of Service Centre LehreLernen

The Service Centre LehreLernen offers three certificate programmes for university didactics qualifications.

  • Basic Certificate Programme

    In the certificate programme Basic, the principles of university didactics are taught.

    The programme is suitable for both beginners and participants who have been working in teaching for a longer period of time but have not yet attended further training courses in higher education didactics. Prerequisite for participation is that you teach your own seminar or course.

    The Certificate Programme Basic is designed as a one-semester programme, but can also be extended over two semesters.

  • Advanced Certificate Programme

    The Certificate Programme Advanced is suitable for people who have already been active in teaching for several semesters and who also have basic knowledge of university didactics. In a small group you will work intensively on the further improvement of your teaching. The programme is tailored to the specific needs of the participants. The aim of the programme is to reflect on the experience gained in teaching, to acquire in-depth knowledge of university didactic issues and to expand your own teaching skills.

    In order to meet the requirements for participation in the Advanced Certificate Programme, we recommend attending the Certificate Programme Basic first. Alternatively, proof of previous further education in higher education didactics can be used to qualify for participation, e.g. participation in other certificate programmes, or attendance of several higher education didactic workshops on the relevant topics of the Certificate Programme Basic.

  • Digital teaching

    The certificate programme "Digital Teaching" is suitable for all lecturers who are interested in the use of digital media in university teaching.

    The aim of the programme is to raise instructors' awareness of the wider use of digital media in university teaching and to support them in developing their own media-supported teaching concepts. A prerequisite for participation is that you must teach your own course. The certificate programme "Digital Teaching" is designed as a one-semester programme, but can also be extended over two semesters.

Certificate "Tenure Track Qualification Programme"

The programme offers high-quality knowledge and skills in the areas of research, teaching and leadership. The workshops are designed for tenure-track professors, junior professors and junior research group leaders at Jena University. After successful participation in the basic and advanced modules, participants receive the certificate "Tenure Track Qualification Programme" as a document for the tenure track evaluation.
