Study programmes for guest students

  • Guest students can apply for up to three subjects. Here you will find an overview of the possible programmes for guest students
  • Find out about the content of the programmes in the module catalogues for guest studentsExternal link.
  • The content of the programmes you choose should match your degree programme at your home university.
  • Pay attention to the language of instruction. Many coruses ar taught in German. Only some courses at Master's level are taught in English. You should have at least B2 level knowledge of the language of instruction.
  • Note the study level: Bachelor's students choose modules at Bachelor's level. Master's students can choose between Bachelor's and Master's modules.

Course offer/Timetable

  • Guest students create their own timetable. 
  • Only select modules that are listed in the module catalogue for guest studentsExternal link in your programme.
  • A module often consists of several courses. Check the course catalogue and the module catalogue to find out which courses make up a module.
  • The course catalogueExternal link contains the courses offered in a semester. You do not need a login or password to view the courses on offer. 
    The course catalogue for the summer semester is online from mid-February.
    The course catalogue for the winter semester is online from mid-August.
  • Credits are only awarded for successfully completed modules. You should therefore select complete modules in your timetable.

German courses

  • All students can attend language courses, e.g. German courses de, at the Language Centre in addition to their subject of study. You can earn credits in all language courses. The language courses are subject to a fee.

Thesis/Research

  • Guest students who wish to conduct research for their thesis or carry out an individual research project must submit a supervision agreementpdf, 359 kb · de with their application.
  • In the supervision agreement, you specify the topic and the research objective, your supervisor and the credits to be earned.

ECTS credits

  • Credits are only awarded for successfully completed modules. This means that you
    - must attend all courses of a module 
    - for the entire lecture period and 
    - pass all examinations of the module.
  • Information on acquiring credits for a module can be found in the module catalogue for guest studentsExternal link.
  • The number of credits per module is fixed and cannot be changed or determined by you.
  • During your guest studies at the University of Jena, you must fulfil the credit requirements of your home university or scholarship programme. Erasmus+ students must earn 30 credits per semester. Regardless of the exchange programme, all guest students should take at least two courses or 10 credits per semester.

Registration for courses

  • Guest students register for courses after enrolement via FriedolinExternal link
  • Registration deadline for the winter semester 2024/25: 6 October 2024
  • Attend classes from the beginning.
  • Cancel your registration for the course if you do not wish to attend.

Examinations

  • The module catalogue for guest studentsExternal link defines the performance/examination for the respective module. Please also refer to the course catalogueExternal link and the course itself. 
  • Regular and active participation in the course is a prerequisite for participation in the examination.
  • It is necessary to register for the examination.
  • The examination period is set individually. It begins towards the end of the lecture period and can last until the end of the semester. Find out more in the course and plan your stay accordingly.

Exam registration

  • Guest students register for examinations via FriedolinExternal link.
  • Registration period in the summer semester:14 October - 23 December 2024.
  • Cancel your registration during this period if you do not wish to take an exam.
  • Exception: Guest students in these progrsmmes do not register for examinations via Friedolin:
    Ancient History - Arabic Studies - Classical Archaeology - Classical Studies - Law - Materials Science - Medical Photonics - Medicine - Molecular Medicine

Performance assessment/grades

  • Examinations are assessed with a German grade or the predicate "pass"/"fail".
  • Credits are only awarded for passed examinations.
  • Regular participation in courses is compulsory.
German grade   Description  
1.0 - 1.5 = very good (sehr gut) pass; credits are awarded
1.6 - 2.5 = good (gut) pass; credits are awarded
2.6 - 3.5 = satisfactory (befriedigend) pass; credits are awarded
3.6. - 4.0 = sufficient (ausreichend) pass; credits are awarded
4.1 - 5.0 = fail (ungenügend) fail; no credits are awarded

Documentation and Transcript of Records

  • Guest students can receive a Transcript of Records if the courses, modules and examinations have been registered via FriedolinExternal link by the deadline.
  • After completing the examinations, the lecturers will enter your grade in Friedolin.
  • Certificates for language courses are not recorded via Friedolin. You will receive a certificate from the Language Centre sent by e-mail. Forward this certificate to incoming@uni-jena.de
  • Once all grades have been submitted to the International Office, the International Office issues a Transcript of Records. You and your home university  receive it by e-mail (and by post uppon request).
  • Exception: There is a different form of assessment documentation for students in these programmes:

Semester dates

  • Here you can find the semester dates at the University of Jena.
  • Placement test for students of Germanic subjects (ATS programme/German as a Foreign Language)
    Participation in the placement test is mandatory for guest students of Germanic subjects

    10.10.2024 - 11:00-13:00 - written placement test - lecture hall 2, Carl-Zeiß-Str. 3
    11.10.2024 - 09:00- 13:00 - oral assessment - seminar rooms 314/315/316/318,Carl-Zeiß-Str. 3
    After the announcement of your result you can choose ATS modules.
  • Placement test for German courses at the Language Centre
    Participation in the test is mandatory if you would like to attend German language courses at the Language Centre. All information on registration and the test can be found here.
