Programme Summary

The M.Sc. Quantum Science and Technology is an all-English, two-year Master's degree course providing multidisciplinary coverage in the field of quantum sciences including quantum mechanics, information, communication, computing, imaging, sensing and further rising fields of quantum technology. The course schedule ranges from fundamental scientific subjects to application-oriented quantum engineering aspects. The program is designed to incorporate students of different backgrounds and nationalities. It aims to provide them with a solid knowledge of the quantum theory as well as the potential of quantum-related effects, both for academic research and for technological applications in industry. All lectures, courses and modules are taught completely in English.

Course Structure

The programme comprises four educational stages and is complemented by German and English language courses as well as ASP training courses:

  • I - Adjustment: This stage provides students with the necessary background knowledge in Quantum Theory, Quantum Physics, and, if necessary, Soid State, Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. Thus, in the adjustment stage, students are offered courses which will directly connect to their individual state of knowledge from previous education.
  • II - Essentials: At this stage, students will be introduced to more advanced quantum topics, particularly the Fundamentals and Advances Quantum Information Theory. It is also during this time, that students will gain first hands-on experience in the quantum laboratory as a block practical course.
  • III - Specialization: This stage allows students to acquire specialized expertise by choosing individually from a selection of more than 25 advanced courses.
  • IV - Practical quantum training, Internship and Master's degree thesis: An 8-week academic or industrial internship is scheduled for each student already during the second semester of their studies. According to their specialization, students can perform a 9-month research project based on a current topic of research. At the end of the program, students will carry out an advanced scientific laboratory quantum courses and document their results in a Master's degree thesis.

Career opportunities

Students enrolled in the two-year program receive dedicated tutorial support and are trained for leading positions in industry and academia. Moreover, graduating the M.Sc. Quantum Science and Technology programme offers a very direct way to enter our prestigious doctoral (PhD) scheme afterwards.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

Admission requirements for the Quantum Science and Technology degree program leading to a Master of Science degree are a first university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in physics or a comparable degree program with an overall grade of at least 2.0 (good), at least 12 CP in mathematics (in particular analysis, linear algebra, numerics), 8 CP in quantum physics and related subject areas (in particular quantum mechanics, solid state physics, atomic and molecular physics) or proof of equivalent qualifications based on relevant activities already completed and skills already acquired. The selection committee of the Abbe School of Photonics (ASP) will decide on your admission.

  • Proof of language proficiency

For this master's programme the following language proficiency is required:

English at the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language, demonstrated e.g. by:

    • IELTS: 5.5 or better (overall score)
    • Toefl (IBT) 82 or better (overall score)
    • Cambridge Certificate B2

    or a recognised equivalent.

    German proficiency is not needed.
