Energy research at Friedrich Schiller University Jena combines basic research and application-oriented research in the field of Energy Storage and Energy Conversion by developing novel materials on the basis of polymers, carbon materials, ceramics or glasses. Environmental Research includes procedural issues of environmental technology, e.g. in the area of air and water pollution control.

Research activities in the area of Energy Storage concentrate on electrochemical energy storage systems based on harmless and environmentally friendly resources. Fuel cells, photovoltaics (polymer solar cells, intelligent facades) and hydrogen production (photocatalytic water splitting) are topics of energy conversion research in the LIGHT profile of the University. Another aspect in research is the area of clean tech, which focuses on various membrane technologies, for instance, polymer-based membranes which are obtained, e.g., via the combination of block copolymers.
