Askan Weidemann is a PhD candidate at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and Goethe University Frankfurt, where he studies the domestic politics of the People's Republic of China, in particular political participation, digitalisation and institutional change.
Before moving to Hamburg, Askan earned a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences at Maastricht University and a Master's degree in Contemporary Chinese Studies at Oxford University.
Askan has many years of experience in China, dating back to his school days. Most recently, he was a Research Fellow at Tsinghua University in Beijing in 2023 and a second research visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou in 2024.
