Sensitised and activated at the biodiversity workshop

At the end of May 2024, students from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena's environmental department organised a workshop on building insect hotels and nesting boxes in cooperation with the Jena NABU district association and the Jena city forest. The 14 participants came from very different backgrounds and with different levels of knowledge. Some families, some with small children, were busy building, otherwise it was mainly students who took part in the workshop.

After a brief introduction, background information on species extinction and important tips on how to build insect hotels, the group then headed to the "forest laboratory" on the grounds of the Jena city forest on Schottplatz. Here, small groups worked diligently sawing, drilling and hammering to create adequate accommodation for birds and insects. The scheduled construction time of 2.5 hours was fully utilised and the finished insect hotels and nesting boxes could be taken home afterwards.

The project was funded by the Friends and Patrons of the University of Jena via the "Sustainable Project Cheques". The Green Office was responsible for project management. The project team would like to thank the project partners NABU Kreisverband JenaExternal link, Green Office and Stadtforst JenaExternal link for their financial support and excellent cooperation.
