This presentation gives an insight into my ten-year journey in geoscience in China, from the early days as a PhD student to the current position as Tenured Associate Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology at Tongji University in Shanghai. The focus is on the unique challenges and opportunities that have arisen through field work, state-of-the-art laboratory capacity and collaboration with national and international research partners. In addition, the role of Chinese science funding for (inter)national junior and mid-career researchers will be highlighted and how cultural characteristics and traditions shaped the work and life at my stations in Nanjing and Shanghai. This reflection offers both a personal and professional perspective on a successful academic career in a dynamic and culturally rich environment, while also addressing the growing uncertainties in academic funding and the increasing pressures in academic careers overall.
