As part of the "Laptop Donation Campaign", we lend decommissioned and refurbished laptops to students free of charge for the duration of a semester with the possibility of extension.
The aim is to
enable students with limited financial resources to participate in increasingly digital teaching and
promote the sustainable use of electronic devices.
The project was initiated in 2020 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. We were able to help numerous students in an uncomplicated way - also thanks to donations from private individuals and regional companies, including ZEISS, HUK-Coburg Dienstleistungs GmbH, Xceptance Software Technologies GmbH and Eurofins Umwelt Ost GmbH. Facilities|institutions|(structural) units and research groups|study groups|task forces at Friedrich Schiller University have also donated laptops that are no longer needed for research and teaching. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all donors once again!
The project is now to be intensified again. Because the demand is unbroken. However, many of the devices have now had to be decommissioned and only a handful of the laptops are currently available for loan. We continue to use internally decommissioned devices, but these can only meet demand to a limited extent.
We are therefore still dependent on donations from companies and organisations.
Information for donors
Do you have laptops in your company that you no longer need and have decommissioned, but which are still in working order? Then we would be delighted if you could make them available to us for our "Laptop Donation Campaign".
We will be happy to report on your donation in internal university channels such as on our website. We will provide you with an appropriate logo to draw attention to your commitment in your company channels.
Would you like to take part? Then please contact the Green Office of the University of Jena at nachhaltigkeit@uni-jena.de
Thank you very much!
Information for students
Do you need a donated laptop for your studies? Or do you already have a loan device and have questions about it?
After we receive the donated devices, they are first cleaned and technically checked. The employees of the IT department of the Thuringian University and State Library then prepare them so that students can work with them: Any remaining data is securely and reliably deleted in accordance with the standards of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the computer is equipped with the open operating system Ubuntu and some basic software (e.g. LibreOffice, internet browser).
Students can then send a request to laptopspende@uni-jena.de. If devices are available, they can be collected and borrowed free of charge for one semester. If necessary, the loan can also be extended.
Why is the project important?
Through the laptop donation campaign, we can help to ensure that all students can participate in online teaching, regardless of their financial situation. This now makes up a large part of university teaching and the availability of internet-enabled devices is essential for success in both studies and research.
The campaign also helps to increase the lifespan of old devices by reusing and regularly refurbishing them, thus saving resources for the production of new devices.
