  • Introduction of an ERP system - joint project of the institutions of higher education in Thuringia

In 2014, the institutions of higher education in Thuringia agreed to record all resource-related processes in the subject areas of accounting, procurement and human resources in a common system, thereby creating a standardised data basis. To this end, a holistic ERP system is to be established in which these university resources can be efficiently managed and consistently mapped.

The FSU Jena University Computer Centre is involved in numerous sub-projects throughout the course of the project. The aim of the URZ is to transfer the ERP system from the implementation phase to productive service operation at the Jena site as part of the Thuringian IT Service Centre.

  • Introduction of an alumni administration for the institutions of higher education in Thuringia

Former students and staff identify strongly with their former institution of higher education. In order to maintain contact and build an alumni network, many institutions of higher education operate an alumni management system. The institutions of higher education in Thuringia have been cooperating for some time in the subject area|field of alumni management and are developing a joint IT solution to manage their former students and employees.

As an IT service provider, the University Computer Centre at FSU Jena supports the alumni managers in Thuringia in determining the requirements for IT support in alumni management with the aim of implementing an effective solution.

  • Development of a cross-university identity management system

As part of the Thuringian cooperation, the University Computer Centre at FSU Jena is involved in the development and establishment of a cross-university identity management system. This system will enable locally valid user authentications from individual institutions of higher education to be read and processed at other Thuringian universities in order to ensure the cross-university use of various services such as e-learning and to further improve user-friendliness and the range of services and tenders.

  • Further development of thoska: eTicket - the electronic semester ticket

The Thuringian institution of higher education and student union card(thoska) is a multifunctional chip card that combines various functions including student ID. The thoska is also a semester ticket and can be used by students as a ticket on all regional trains in Thuringia and participating means of public transport. At the moment, the semester ticket is only printed on the thoska and therefore has no forgery-proof feature. With the introduction of an eTicket, the semester ticket will also be stored electronically on the thoska so that it can be read by the transport companies. The University Computer Centre at the University of Jena is playing a leading role in the development of the necessary software solution.

  • Provision of a new service for the long-term archiving of data

As part of the Thuringian cooperation, long-term archiving for digital media is being introduced in a network between the URZ and the ThULB of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the URMZ of the University of Erfurt and the UniRZ of the Ilmenau University of Technology. With the establishment of the network service, Thuringian institutions of higher education have the opportunity to transfer digital media together with metadata (e.g. keywords for searches) to one of the three network partners for long-term archiving. The replication of data at all three locations associated with archiving and the use of different storage technology at the respective locations serves to systematically avoid errors. The software used is irods, more information can be found at irods.orgExternal link.

  • Establishment of a high-performance computing advice centre

As part of the Thuringian Higher Education Digitalization Strategy, funds have been raised for consulting services for high-performance computing. At the IT Service Centre of the Thuringian Institutions of Higher Education (IT-DLZ) at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, a position for cross-university advisory services(s)|consultations on the use of high-performance computing will be established. This position is to be interlinked with capacities at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Ilmenau University of Technology and the newly founded DLR Institute of Data Science in order to provide scientists with adequate support in the use of high-performance computing systems.

2018 e-Learning - Switch to the Moodle e-learning platform at the institution of higher education Nordhausen

Moodle is a modern and efficient e-learning software that can be used as a modular and adaptable learning and working platform for studying and teaching, but also for work in research projects or (university) chairs. The platform is particularly suitable for supplementing classroom teaching, as a knowledge repository and as a communication platform.

After the University Computer Centre introduced the Moodle e-learning platform centrally at the University of Jena, we took the lead in coordinating and implementing the introduction of the Moodle platform at the institution of higher education in Nordhausen as part of the Thuringian cooperation.

2017 - Provision of an online storage service based on Nextcloud for the institution of higher education in Schmalkalden
After the University Computer Centre introduced a cloud solution as an online storage service centrally at the FSU Jena, a separate cloud was provided for the institution of higher education in Schmalkalden as part of the Thuringian cooperation. The cloud of the institution of higher education is tendered as a service of the IT Service Centre Jena and managed by employees of the University Computer Centre.

2016 - Data network of Thuringian universitiesA derevised contract between the German Research Network Association (DFN) and the state of Thuringia has been in forcesince de01/2016 with the aim of providing all institutions ofhigher deeducation in the state with fast internet access. From 07/2017, this contract was extended to include the Gera-Eisenach Cooperative State University so that all 10 institutions of higher education can participate.
In addition to a fast and path-redundant internet connection, the contract enables very fast connections between the institutions of higher education in the state and, in particular, to the FSU-Jena and TU-Ilmenau sites of the IT Service Centre of Thuringian Universities (IT-DLZ).
Accompanying the changes to the contract, funds of around 1,00,000 were applied for for technical support as part of the 2016 HSB 0505: "XWIN-Router Thüringen" project. The funds decision from the TMWWDG to finance this router infrastructure was made in 09/2016 using the ERDF in the 2014-2020 funding period.
The procurement phase took place from 10/2016 until delivery in 05/2017. Since then, the infrastructural requirements for joint ongoing and new research projects have also been significantly improved.
