Working in academia after their studies is an attractive career prospect for many students. However, the path into academia and in particular the opportunity to work there without the pressure of fixed-term contracts is much more difficult. While on the one hand, individual top performance, stamina and assertiveness are required, the prospects of a secure job with fair working conditions are few and far between.
The discussion about (precarious) working conditions in academia is also becoming more and more prevalent among students, and young academics are increasingly asking themselves the question: What can I expect in academia? And how attractive is a career in research and teaching really?
Together with representatives from academia, we would like to discuss different perspectives on working in academia and thus provide critical insights into the circumstances there. We would also like to debate possibilities for change and co-design. The panel will explore the following questions: How fair are working conditions in academia? Do precarious working conditions jeopardise the quality of research? What needs to change to make academia more attractive again?
The following people will discuss on the panel:
- Prof Dr Thomas Pertsch (Vice President for Research and Innovation,
Friedrich Schiller University Jena) - Kathrin Meißner (Network for Good Work in Science)
- Marcel J. Paul (DR.FSU / Council of Doctoral Candidates at the University of Jena)
Registration for the event is not necessary. The language of the event will be German.
The panel is organised by students from the Honours programme for research-oriented students.
