How does a maths lecture work? Perhaps the most common application of mathematical methods in the real world is the solution of minimisation problems. From school, we are familiar with the search for zeros for the derivative as a criterion for extreme points of functions, but in many realistic models from Physics, engineering or economics, non-differentiable functions occur. The lecture shows how the concept of differentiability can be suitably generalised.
