This page summarizes the basic requirements for bilateral exchange programmes offered by the Friedrich Schiller University, including general prerequisites for participation and the possible duration of your stay. Relevant requirements are listed for each continent.

  • Africa

    Requirements

    • enrolment on a full-time study programme at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena
    • high proficiency in the official language Afrikaans or English (at least B2)
    • when applying, students must have been enrolled for at least 3 semesters in their field of study

    Please note: foreign students cannot participate in exchange programmes in their home country!

    Duration

    • one semester or one year of study
  • Asia

    Requirements

    • enrolment on a full-time study programme at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena
    • C1 English skills and/or proficiency in the official language
    • when applying, students must have been enrolled for at least 3 semesters in their field of study

    • one semester or one year of study
  • North America

    Requirements

    • enrolment on a full-time study programme at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena
    • very good English skills (at least B2):
      • You must take the TOEFL test before your stay abroad. You can register for the test online (www.toefl.orgExternal link) or, in urgent cases, by phone (TOEFL European Headquarters Amsterdam: +31-320-239-640).
    • when applying, students must have been enrolled for at least three semesters in their field of study.

    Duration

    • one year of study (August/September to May/June, depending on the institution)
    • one-semester stays possible
  • Latin America

    Requirements

    • enrolment on a full-time study programme at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena
    • very good language skills (C1)
    • when applying, students must have been enrolled for at least three semesters in their field of study

  • Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe

    Requirements

    • enrolment on a full-time study programme at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena
    • C1 English skills (sometimes B2) and/or proficiency in the official language.
    • When applying, students must have been enrolled for at least three semesters in their field of study
