International certificates

In order to gain the university entrance qualification for a German institute of higher education, foreign students have to provide evidence of their German language skills. This can be achieved through any one of the following examination formats: DSH, TestDaF, and telc.

telc – The European Language Certificates

This examination is centralized and conducted at designated telc examination centres, e.g. in Thuringia. Telc test centres can be found on the telc language tests webpageExternal link.

The Language Centre of the University of Jena does not offer preparation courses for telc examinations.

DSH - Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang für ausländische Studierende

This test can be taken directly at the University of Jena via JenDaF e.V.External link

In order to take the test, you will need to participate in a DSH preparation course.

In order to be accepted for the preparatory course, you will need to demonstrate a clear intention to study at the University of Jena and provide proof of a university entrance qualification and German language skills at level B1 according to the CEFR.

Enrolment and admission can be arranged only through the International OfficeExternal link (Internationales Büro/ IB) of the FSU.

Preparation courses are offered by JenDaF e.V. via the Institute for German as a foreign and second language, and intercultural studies de (Institut für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache und Interkulturelle Studien).

TestDaF

The Test-DaF Institut conducts the test at external test centres.

The Language Centre of the University of Jena does not offer preparation courses for TestDaF.

Cambridge Certificates, IELTS, and TOEFL are the most commonly recognized international certificates if you need to provide evidence of your English language skills.

If you are planning to study abroad, apply for an internship or similar, always check which test format is preferred.

Cambridge Certificates

The UK, most English-speaking countries and many other international universities recognise Cambridge Certificates. It is unconditionally valid. The Cambridge Advanced English Certificate demonstrates abilities at C1 level and the Cambridge Proficiency Certificate demonstrates C2 level according to the CEFR.

The Language Centre of the University of Jena offers preparation courses for these exams if there is personnel capacity. To join the Cambridge Advanced preparation course you will need to demonstrate an existing ability at level B2 according to the CEFR. Similarly, to join the Cambridge Proficiency preparation course you will need to demonstrate an existing ability at level C1. Time spent abroad can be taken into consideration. IELTS – International English Language Testing System

This certificate covers several language levels and is valid for two years. UK, most English speaking countries, and many other international universities recognise IELTS certificates. Always check which score is required for your degree programme.

TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language

It is advisable to take this test If you want to study in the USA, although some universities do accept Cambridge or IELTS certificates. The TOEFL certificate is valid for two years. Always check the score required for your degree programme as this may vary.

DELF/ DALF

The DELF/ DALF certificates provide evidence of your language skills in French and evaluate the following communication skills:

• Listening comprehension
• Reading comprehension
• Written production
• Oral production

They are internationally recognized as the requirements meet the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You can take the DELF certificate for levels A1 to B2. You can take the DALF certificate for the advanced language levels of C1 and C2. The certificates are unconditionally valid.

The Language Centre of the University of Jena is an accredited test centre for DELF/DALF certificates. Thus, you can take the tests directly at the FSU.

The certificates of DELI and DITALS provide evidence of your Italian language skills. They may be necessary, not only for your studies, professional career, or authorities but to demonstrate your Italian language skills as a teacher.

CELI – Certificati di Lingua Italiana

The Romance Languages Institute (Institut für Romanistik) of the University of Jena is an accredited test centre for CELI. You can take the CELI test at several levels, which correspond to the CEFR.

The University per Stranieri di PerugiaExternal link carries out the tests. Thus, you can take these tests directly at the University of Jena.

Enrolment and admission to CELI is via the Romance Languages Institute de of the University of Jena.

The Language Centre of the University of Jena does not offer preparation courses.

DITALS

 Certificazione di Didattica dell'Italiano come Lingua Straniera

The University per Stranieri di SienaExternal link issues the DITALS certificate (level I and II). It provides evidence of theoretical, methodological, and operative skills in language pedagogy for Italian as a foreign language. It is aimed at teachers of Italian who have several years of teaching experience and who would like to deepen their skills as well as obtain extra certification.

The Language Centre of the University of Jena is an accredited test centre for the DITALS certificate I and II. Thus, you can take the test directly at the FSU.

CELPE – Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangieros

The CELPE test is the only official Brazilian language certificate for people whose mother tongue is not Portuguese. The Brazilian Ministry of Education (Ministério da Educacao – MEC) is responsible for the test.

The Romance Languages Institute (Institut für Romanistik) of the University of Jena is an accredited test centre for CELPE. Thus, you can take the test directly at the FSU.

Enrolment takes place online via the INEPExternal link. You receive confirmation of your enrolment directly from the Brazilian MEC. The Language Centre of the University of Jena does not offer preparation courses for CELPE.

DELE – Diploma de Español como Lengua Estranjera

This Spanish language certificate provides evidence of language skills at several levels. The Instituto Cervantes issues the certificate on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Certificates are unconditionally valid.

SIELE – Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española

You can demonstrate your Spanish language skills with the SIELE certificate.

The test is carried out at various test centres for SIELE.
