Italian developed directly from Latin. Thus, Italian and Latin are very similar and learners of the Italian language have little difficulty if they had Latin in school. Skills in both languages facilitate the understanding of Latin loan words in German.

While the German alphabet consists of 26 letters, the Italian makes do with 21. The letters of J, K, W, and Y are used in foreign words only, which makes spotting them easy. If you learn the few pronunciation rules of certain letter combinations, pronunciation will be simple.
