With around 18,000 students and more than 8,600 employees, the university significantly shapes the character of the city of Jena. The university recognizes the resulting social responsibility and aims to fulfill it by engaging in the sustainable development of the city and region. The Declaration of Principles on Sustainability adopted by the Senate sets goals for the various university areas and serves as the basis for the development of the sustainability strategy for the University of Jena.
