  • Focus on diversity and intersectionality

    Under the heading of ‘Diversitätsmedizin’ (diversity medicine), Professor Marie von Lilienfeld-Toal's research group is investigating the influence of diversity-related factors such as gender, age or ethnicity - and their interaction - on the course of diseases. The goal is to advance individualised medicine. In this context, the team is also working on an innovative and interdisciplinary teaching project on  discrimination-conscious and diversity-oriented teaching aimed at medical students in the clinical semester, and is intended to convey basic knowledge about diversity in medicine and (structural) discrimination as well as critical awareness of this. Central to the teaching concept is the idea of intersectionality. Their research focus is on analysing (changing forms of) masculinity and family structures, couple relationships, and shifting sexualities. Adopting a broad concept of work — including unpaid house and care work — the Institute also studies the crisis of social reproduction and shifting relations of care and caring in times of rapidly changing family structures, welfare states, and demographics. This project aims to develop and implement a multilingual e-learning platform that supports children and young people (in particular migrant children) by pairing them up with a learning buddy.   • Focus on social inequality and class relations

    ‘DIY Society? Informal Economies and Social Participation in Poor Rural Areas" (2020 -2023) — A research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) Part of research into ‘Participation and the Common Good’, this research project sets out to explore how informal economies, self-help and support structures in structurally weak rural areas are organized, where and how they replace previously public provisions and what significance they acquire in conditions of rural flight and shrinkage, social inequality, and municipal funding shortfalls. The project also investigates the conditions under which these informal structures promote participation and enhance the common good — and by contrast — those instances where they (may) risk establishing an exclusive kind of solidarity, facilitating processes of social polarization, revitalizing traditional gender roles, and undermining professional standards.     The ‘Bioeconomy and Inequalities’ junior research group investigates inequalities associated with growth in the bioenergy sector, one of the most significant sectors of the emerging bioeconomy. The project included a number of case studies analysing emergent changes in labour relations, knowledge production and technology, as well as political decision-making and commercial structures in the transnational bioenergy sector. Drawing on approaches from the sociology of global inequalities and world-systems theory, it analysed material flows and trade relations between South America and the European Union as well as between South America and China. This collaborative research centre investigates fundamental structural changes of property that could be observed from 1989 at the very latest.
