In addition to explicit research on gender-, sex- and diversity-related questions, there is now increasing evidence to show that including aspects of sex, gender and social diversity can have a moderating or mediating effect on research in the humanities, social sciences, economics, life sciences, as well as natural sciences and applied technology. Examining whether gender and diversity are relevant dimensions in addressing certain research questions, and integrating them if the answer is yes, has produced more differentiated, comprehensive and consequently better research results.

The German Research Foundation and the European Commission consider the inclusion of sex, gender, and diversity aspects as an excellence criterion that improves the quality of research and avoids so-called ‘blind spots’. This is why they recommend to reflect on the relevance of gender and diversity when preparing project proposals. Applications for research grants should therefore always include this information. Learn moreExternal link
