Programme summary

The international study programme Chemistry of Materials is research-oriented and provides, based on the education in a qualified undergraduate degree programme, the ability to work independently in a modern, interdisciplinary field at the interface between chemistry, physics and materials science. The study programme provides extensive knowledge of synthesis, chemistry and the properties of novel functional materials. The entire spectrum from the molecule via nanoscale materials to the bulk materials will be discussed. A particular focus is given on advanced methods of industrial materials synthesis and chemical processing, such as nanomaterials, thin films, macromolecular materials, glasses and ceramics, and materials for energy. In these fields, both extensive experimental-analytical skills and computer simulation from atomistic to meso- and macroscopic length scale are of particular interest.

Special features

The english study programme is designed for national and foreign students interested in an international curriculum. Due to its interdisciplinarity as well as its research-orientation, the study programme fulfills the need for qualified graduates in the broad field of materials chemistry and in particular, of nanotechnology. Furthermore, the programme encourages exchange of students, ideas and culture allowing the spread of their expertise. Global issues in renewable energy, optics and photonics, health and aging, transportation, and information and data processing are addressed.

Career opportunities

The M.Sc. study programme Chemistry of Materials is strongly researched-oriented. The graduates will be primarily employed in companies involved in materials chemistry research and development, but also in quality assurance and control as well as in sustainability assessment facilities. Alternatively (high-performing) graduates can pursue a scientific career and participate in one of the Ph.D. programmes of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Due to its modularity and its focus on current research topics, the study programme can be designed individually by choosing either an analytical or computational focus.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

    For this master's programme, you need an above-average subject-specific bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or physics of at least 180 credit points (ECTS) or an equivalent first undergraduate degree (e.g. material sciences) that includes modules in the field of chemistry or physics of at least 60 credit points. Your CGPA should be 1.9 ("good") or better.

  • Language requirements

    This master's programme requires the following language proficiency:

    • Proof of English language proficiency at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
    • German language proficiency at the DSH-1 level is strongly recommended. Proof is not required.

  • University entrance qualification certificate

    Please upload at the online application system your university entrance certificate/school leaving certificate. Usually, this means the school graduation diploma (German "Abitur"), i.e. the diploma that makes you eligible for studies at an University or other institution for higher education. Be mindful of the fact that here, we do not need any University diploma but a High School diploma! 

  • Previous university degrees earned

    All previous University degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, etc.) if available before the application deadline - if not, please make a note of the anticipated date of issue of your degree certificate. Please upload your University degree or the most actual, detailed transcript of records/ mark sheet of all semesters available to you, should you not hold your degree certificate at the time of application. The main document is the degree/ transcript based on which you apply for the master programme.

  • Detailed transcript of records

    Detailed transcript of records/ mark sheet of your first, subject-specific University degree, with which you apply for the master's programme. This transcript MUST contain an overall cumulative grade point average or average mark.

  • Proof of relevant work experience

    Should you have obtained subject-specific work experience, you can upload corresponding certificates in order to support your application. 

  • Proof of subject-specific practical experience

    Should you have obtained subject-specific practical experience (e.g. by internships etc.), you can upload corresponding certificates in order to support your application. 

  • Proof of language proficiency

    You must submit the proof of proficiency in the following languages:

    • Proof of proficiency in English (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

Additional application documents for international students

  • Translation of foreign/external application documents

    Every mandatory application document from foreign/external countries must also be available in either English OR German translation. Such a translation has to be conducted by officially acknowledged/ sworn translators or translation offices.

  • Proof of grading system

    External/foreign degree certificates/ transcripts of records must contain information on the grading system (= description of the maximum grade possible and the minimum passing grade) used at the respective University. 

  • Certificate APS

    Applicants with degrees from India, Vietnam or China must submit the original APS-certificate issued by the German Embassy.

  • University entrance exam

    Applicants from the following countries must submit a certificate of their university entrance examination/college entrance examination:

    • Iran (College entrance examination certificate or certificate of pre-university course/year)
    • Republic of Korea/South Korea: SAT (Scholastic Ability Test)
    • People's Republic of China: College entrance examination certificate ("Gaokao")
