Web presence and web projects - your path to an Internet presence

The Web Development and Web Services section of the University Communication Department  deprovides the central content management system for the websites of Friedrich Schiller University Jena. You do not need any technical knowledge to create and manage university websites for your institute or to present your research activities, nor do you need to operate your own content management system or web server to create websites. All pages created automatically have the uniform corporate design of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

Your website can also be given a domain of your choice as an entry point (*.uni-jena.de), provided this domain is not already being used by others. All appearances in the CMS are automatically equipped with a current security certificate (TLS certificate).

The web development and web services department advises you on the design of your website and supports you in the operation of the content management system and the creation of your content.

A uniform image strengthens the visibility of the "Friedrich Schiller University Jena" brand at home and abroad and creates identification among students, staff and alumni. Last but not least, a reliably applied uniform image promotes recognition and trust in our university among prospective students and partners from science, business and the general public.

Would you like to run a CMS on a web server to create and manage web content, e.g. because you need an individual website that is separate from the University of Jena for your cross-university collaborative project? But you don't want to run your own web server? The URZ provides you with your own instance in a central web server environment.

The instance consists of a Linux server, an Apache web server, a Maria database (optional) and PHP ("LAMP" server). A certificate is requested and integrated in your name to ensure secure operation.

You should keep these things in mind:

• the URZ only maintains the LAMP infrastructure,
• the maintenance of your web application must be carried out by an experienced webmaster,
• You are responsible for the content and for compliance with the law (data protection, accessibility, etc.),
• Security gaps must be avoided by always using the latest versions,
• A valid SSL certificate (server certificate de) is required for a secure connection.

If you wish to make the website available under the domain uni-jena.de (e.g. yourprojectname.uni-jena.de), special requirements apply. Your requirements will be recorded and checked together with the Web Development and Web Services division of the University Communication department.

Are you organizing a workshop or a conference and would like a web-based management of participants and contributions? Indico supports the management of a conference over the entire cycle from registration, submission and review of contributions to the administration of participants.

Do you need your own application or database server for the operation of specialized services in research or teaching that the URZ does not offer? The URZ offers you the option of hosting virtual servers. These are provided as root servers (self-managed virtual machines). You receive root access to your virtual server, which you can manage independently, configure individually and on which you can install any applications.

You should bear these things in mind:

• The URZ only maintains the virtualization environment and creates weekly data backups; you are responsible for maintaining the virtual server,
• The virtual servers are handed over to you with the latest operating system versions in the basic installation (possible operating systems can be found in the application form),
• Security gaps must be avoided by always using the latest versions of the operating system and the software/applications installed on it,
• the maintenance of your server system must be carried out by an experienced technician,
• A valid SSL certificate (server certificate) is required for web services,
• You are responsible for content and compliance with the law (data protection, accessibility, etc.).

Servercertificate
Use a server certificate to secure access to your server so that data and information can be exchanged securely between your server and all users.

HTTP-Proxy
When a server system of the URZ is provided, it is located in a specially secured network area of the URZ. If your system needs to access certain services or systems outside this protected area (e.g. to download updates), this is possible via the HTTP proxy of the URZ. In order to establish a connection to the desired external system, its domain / URL must be entered in the proxy (port activation).
