Application deadlines
Applications for admission to a master's programme must be submitted online via our Friedolin 2.0External link online application portal within the specified application period. It is not possible to apply outside the application period.
Applications for the winter semester intake: from 1 April. The end of the application period depends on the programme of your choice, see Application periods for master's programmespdf, 202 kb · de.
Applications for the summer semester intake: between 1 December and 15 January. It is not possible to start all programmes in the summer semester! Please use our study programme finder and click on the the programme of your choice to learn whether it is possible to apply for the summer semester intake.

Application deadlines for higher semesters
It is only possible to begin a programme in a higher semester de if you meet the following conditions:
- You are enrolled in another master's programme at the time you apply.
- You have passed exams and obtained credits in your current master's studies and can provide proof of these credits.
The same deadlines apply for application for admission to a higher semester as for applications to admission to the first semester of a master's programme.

The admission requirements vary depending on the specific master's programme.

Language requirements for German-taught programmes
Who is required to provide proof of their German language proficiency?
- International and German applications with a foreign higher secondary education certificate (which serves as the higher education entrance qualification) that apply for a programme the language of instruction of which is German.
Which German language certificates are accepted?
- German Language Test for Admission to Higher Education, level 2 (DSH-2)
- Goethe Certificate C2 (GDS)
- German Language Diploma Level II of the KMK (DSD II)
- TestDaF, at least TDN 4 in all four parts of the examination
- telc C1 German for Higher Education (min. level »befriedigend«)
- German exam as part of the assessment test at a Studienkolleg
Who is exempt from the requirement to provide proof of their German language proficiency?
- Applicants that have completed a German-medium bachelor's programme in Germany, Austria, Switzerland or Liechtenstein. Please note: This exemption does not apply to offshore universities or overseas branches, remote studies, joint or double degrees mit universities abroad!
- Applicants that hold a German Abitur certificate, Austrian Matura certificate or Swiss Maturität certificate.
What to do if you can't provide the German language certificate at the time you submit your application?
- Please upload proof of your German language proficiency at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) AND
- a document showing that you have registered for a level C1 language course or for one of the above level C1 German language tests.
Is it possible to take a DSH German language course at the University of Jena?
- Yes, you can attend the paid DSH German language preparation course and/or register for the DSH German language test provided you have received an admission letter to a master's programme from the University of Jena.
- Please apply and register at the International Office of the University of Jena.

Prepare your application
- learn more about the documents required to apply for the master’s programme of your choice by clicking on each programme in our study programme finder.
- scan the required documents
- save each document as a single PDF file no bigger than 5 MB
- no hard copies required
- if you are uncertain about the application process, please carefully read the application manual (in the Download section below)

Register and log in to the application portal
- go to our Friedolin 2.0External link online application portal
- register by clicking on "Apply now!"
- you already have an account with Friedolin 2.0 or have submitted an application with Friedolin 2.0 in the past?
- log in using your existing user account and password
- continue with step "Submit your application" in the next section
- after a successful registration, you receive a welcome email
- welcome email is sent to the email address you provided during your registration
- it contains your user ID and instructions on how to confirm your email address
- confirm your mail address
- log in to the Friedolin 2.0External link application portal
- select "Start application"
- select whether you like to receive email notifications or not
IMPORTANT: Do not forget your used ID and password! You will need these details to log in to the application portal.

Submit your application
- if applicable: select the correct semester of application
- select "Add application form"
- go through the steps and follow the instructions in the portal:
- enter the required details and upload the requested documents
- only upload the documents required in each slot (e.g. if a motivation letter is requested upload the motivation letter only!)
- merged PDF files containing all your application documents are not accepted!
- finally, you will be shown an overview of your details and the documents you uploaded
- review the overview carefully before submitting your application
- select "Submit application"
- it is only possible to submit an application within the specified application period
- multiple applications: Provided you meet each programme's requirements, you may apply for several master's programmes within the specified application period

Edit your application
If your application is incomplete or incorrect after initial review by the Master Service Centre, please proceed as follows:
- select "Withdraw and edit application"
- edit the missing/incorrect data or documents
- confirm that the information you have provided is correct
- resubmit the application (only possible within the resubmission deadline)

Email notifications and spam protection
- only if email notifications are activated you will receive notifications about application updates
- you will receive an email about your first status change/update
- due to spam protection, you will not receive any further emails about a status update
- to receive new updates via email, you must log in in the meantime
- we highly recommend to log in regularly to check your current application status

Reset password
If you forgot your password, please click on "Forgot login data?" on top right corner of the portal's start page and follow the instructions.
