Whether you have a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone or measuring devices, internet access is essential for studying or researching. You have various options for accessing the internet and using university-wide services or third-party online tenders.

Internet access at the workplace (LAN)
In staff rooms
Within the university, work equipment (PCs, notebooks, measuring devices) can be connected to the university network via permanently installed data sockets using network cables. In public rooms
In libraries, lecture theatres and seminar rooms, it is possible to access the university network via installed data sockets. The connection to the university network is similar to the registration to eduroam.- Further information: URZ knowledge databaseExternal link
You should note these things:
- The URZ takes care of configuration and troubleshooting up to the data socket.
- You are responsible for configuring your device and procuring the network cable (with RJ45 plug) to connect your device to the data socket.

Internet access at the university (WLAN via eduroam)
Eduroam is the recommended access to the university's WLAN for students, employees, guests with a university account and guests whose home institutions participate in the eduroam projectExternal link (education roaming).

WLAN (eduroam) at many partner institutions
Once set up, you can use eduroam at almost all institutions of higher education in Germany and many universities around the world without having to set up your device again. You can use your university account to log in to the Wi-Fi of participating facilities|institution|(structural) units and gain access to the Internet.WLAN for guests of eduroam partner institutions
Conversely, affiliates of other facility|institution|(structural) units can log into the University of Jena's eduroam using their home institution's account. Note: The configuration settings vary from facility|institution|(structural) unit to facility|institution|(structural) unit! -
Internet access for conferences
Do you need reliable internet access at the venue for people attending workshops, conferences or meetings? The worldwide eduroam network is available on many university premises.
For participants who cannot access eduroam, the University Computer Centre can set up special internet access (WLAN for conference guests) at the conference venue for the duration of the conference. Alternatively, the University Computer Centre will provide special conference accounts for participants to use the eduroam network.

VPN - at home and on the move
Using university services from home and on the move
Many data, information and services can only be accessed within the university's protected network. To access services that can only be accessed internally from outside (e.g. from home), you need a protected connection via VPN access. By setting up a VPN (virtual private network) to the university network, your computer is virtually connected to the university network (intranet) as if it were actually on site.To do this, you must install a VPN client on your computer:
