Wenn Sie vor der Frage stehen, welche beruflichen Möglichkeiten es für Sie außerhalb der Wissenschaft gibt, möchten wir Sie durch einen Karriereabend inspirieren. Wir haben Natur- und Lebenswissenschaftler und -wissenschaftlerinnen eingeladen, die nach ihrer Promotion in außeruniversitären Arbeitsfeldern tätig geworden sind. Sie werden über ihre Tätigkeitsfelder und die Wege dorthin berichten.
Die Veranstaltung wird in Kooperation von Graduierten-Akademie und Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) durchgeführt. Sie findet am 23. Juni von 18 bis 20 Uhr im JSMC Hörsaal in der Neugasse 23 statt. Anschließend wird es ein kleines Get-together mit kalten Getränken und Snacks geben. Die Liste der Referentinnen und Referenten finden Sie hier. Die Vorträge werden in Englisch gehalten.

Das internationale Tutoren-Team der Graduierten-Akademie (intudoc) sucht ab Juni 2014 eine neue Tutorin bzw. einen neuen Tutor. Das intudoc-Team betreut internationale Promovierende bei ihrer Ankunft in Jena. Für die Tätigkeit als Tutor vergibt die Graduierten-Akademie ein Betreuungsstipendium des DAAD in Höhe von monatlich 141 Euro. Bewerben können sich internationale Jenaer Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden aus allen Fachdisziplinen. Bewerbungsschluss ist der 30. April 2014. Die Ausschreibung finden Sie hier.

Im Sommersemester 2014 finden wieder Wahlen zum Rat der Graduierten-Akademie und zum Rat der Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden der FSU (DR.FSU) statt. Alle Wahlberechtigten werden im April 2014 per E-Mail informiert. Wenn Sie für eines der Gremien kandidieren und die Interessen der Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden dort vertreten wollen, können Sie Ihren Wahlvorschlag bis zum 06.05.2014 im Wahlamt einreichen. Viele machen die Erfahrung: Je tiefer sie sich in Ihrem Forschungsalltag in ganz konkrete Fragestellungen einarbeiten, umso schwerer gelingt es, anderen die eigenen Forschungsergebnisse zu vermitteln und sie in einen größeren Zusammenhang einzuordnen.
Was hier helfen kann, ist ein Blick über den Tellerrand. Dazu fordert die Graduierten-Akademie Sie im Sommersemester mit zwei Workshops zu Grundfragen der Wissenschaft heraus:
Grundpositionen der Wissenschaftstheorie (8. April, 9-17 Uhr)
Interdisziplinäre Kompetenz für Geistes-, Sozial- und Naturwissenschaftler (24. April, 9-17 Uhr)
Im Austausch mit Promovierenden und Postdocs anderer Fachbereiche reflektieren Sie die Ziele, Methoden und Grundlagen von Wissenschaft und können mit Abstand auf die Fundamente Ihrer eigenen Forschungstätigkeit blicken. Zugleich erhalten Sie Einblicke in andere Fächerkulturen, gewinnen ein vertieftes Verständnis für deren Denkweisen und schulen damit Ihre interdisziplinäre Kompetenz.

Eine der größten Herausforderungen während der Promotion ist es, sich über mehrere Jahre hinweg Ziele zu setzen, seine Zeit und Aufgaben zu strukturieren und sich immer wieder zu motivieren. Warum sollte man damit allein bleiben?
Für alle, die am regelmäßigen Austausch über ihre Promotion interessiert sind und sich gegenseitige Begleitung auf Augenhöhe wünschen, bietet die Graduierten-Akademie einen Auftaktworkshop zum Start von Promotions-Tandems und -Teams. Dies sind kleine Gruppen von Promovierenden, die sich eigenständig treffen, um über Arbeitsfortschritte, aktuelle Schwierigkeiten und die Situation rund um die Promotion zu sprechen und sich zu unterstützen.

Die Graduierten-Akademie entwickelt mit
Unterstützung der Stiftung Mercator ein deutschlandweit
einzigartiges Weiterqualifizierungskonzept für den Bereich
„Grundfragen der Wissenschaft“. Dahinter steckt die Idee,
Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler zu
ermutigen, aus ihrer wissenschaftlichen Spezialisierung
aufzutauchen, die Grundlagen ihrer eigenen Fachkultur zu
reflektieren und im interdisziplinären Austausch ihren
wissenschaftlichen Weitblick zu schulen.

Im Foyer des Campus am Abbe-Platz wird am 15. Mai von 10 bis 15 Uhr die 5. Firmenkontaktbörse stattfinden. Im Rahmen der Firmenkontaktbörse können Studenten und angehende Absolventen den Kontakt zu Unternehmen suchen sowie an einem umfassenden Rahmenprogramm teilnehmen.
Am 02. Juli veranstaltet das Servicezentrum Forschung und Transfer eine Informationsveranstaltung zu den Fördermöglichkeiten der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Die DFG bietet eine Vielzahl von Förderformaten, die der wissenschaftliche Nachwuchs zielgerichtet nutzen kann, um eigene FuE-Projekte umzusetzen oder eine eigene Nachwuchsgruppe aufzubauen. Die Veranstaltung findet im kleinen Rosensaal von 14:30 bis 16:30 Uhr statt.
Die Servicestelle LehreLernen hat für das
kommende Sommersemester wieder ein umfangreiches Programm für
die hochschuldidaktische Weiterbildung zusammengestellt. Im

Die Ernst-Abbe-Stiftung vergibt zum zweiten Mal Promotionsstipendien an den Thüringer Hochschulen. Mit den Stipendien in Höhe von 1.200 Euro monatlich werden Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden aller Fachrichtungen für einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren gefördert. Eine Verlängerung um ein Jahr ist möglich. Die Bewerbungen für die Stipendien sind nur über die Graduierten-Akademie möglich. Bewerbungsschluss ist der 14.4.2014. Weitere Informationen finden Sie hier.

Die Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften zu Erfurt lobt zwei Preise für Nachwuchswissenschaftler aus: Den „Dalberg-Preis 2014 für transdisziplinäre Nachwuchsforschung“ und den „Reichart-Preis 2014 - Erfurter Nachwuchspreis für anwendungsbezogene Wissenschaft“. Nachdem der erste Promovierendenstammtisch in Jena ein voller Erfolg war, soll dieser nun im monatlichen Rhythmus stattfinden. DoktorandInnen aller Fakultäten treffen sich in relaxter Atmosphäre, um einander kennen zu lernen und sich über promotionsrelevante und fachübergreifende Themen auszutauschen. Nächster Promovierendenstammtisch: 09.04.2014, 20:00 im Grünowski.
Nach der Wahl ist vor der Wahl: Da die Wahlen für die erste Amtsperiode des DR.FSU außerplanmäßig stattfanden, stehen bereits wenige Monate nach der Konstituierung des ersten „Rates der Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden der FSU Jena“ die Wahlen für die folgende Amtsperiode (01.10.2014 - 31.09.2015) an. Die KandidatInnen können vom 07.04. bis zum 06.05.2014 ihre Wahlvorschläge beim Wahlamt der FSU Jena einreichen. Interessierte Promovierende lädt der DR.FSU am 07.04.2014 zu einer Schnuppersitzung ins Auditorium des Hauses für den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs (Johannisstr. 13) ein. If you are thinking about career options outside academia that are attractive for natural and life scientists, there is a career evenings that might inspire your thoughts. For this evening, we invited natural and life scientists who started to work in different fields outside academia after completing their PhD. They are going to talk about their current job and how they managed to find and pursue their individual career path.
This is a joint event of the Graduate Academy and Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC). It will take place on June 23rd from 18:15-20:00h in the JSMC auditorium (Neugasse 23). Afterwards there will be a get together with drinks and snacks. The programme and speakers you find here. The language of the presentations will be english.

The international tutor team of the Graduate Academy (intudoc) is looking for a new tutor from June 2014. The team of intudoc offers support for international doctoral candidates who have just arrived in Jena, helping with paperwork, registrations and orientation in Jena and at FSU. For this the Graduate Academy awards a Support scholarship of DAAD, amounting to EUR 141 per month. International doctoral candidates at FSU of all disciplines are eligible for the programme. Application deadline is 30 April 2014. You can find the announcement here.

During the summer term 2014 the elections of the Board of the Academy and the doctoral council (DR.FSU) will again be taking place. All electives will be notified via e-mail in April 2014. If you want to run for one of the committees and represent the interests of the doctoral candidates, you may submit your nomination to the elective office until 06 May 2014. Further information regarding the committees can be found on the homepage of the DR. FSU and the Graduate Academy. Information regarding the electoral procedure will be provided on the homepage of the elective office shortly.

Many experience the following: the more detailed they become acquainted with specific issues during their daily research, the more difficult it becomes to facilitate the own research results to others and to class them with a larger context.
In this case it can be helpful to think outside the box. To this end, the Graduate Academy is inviting you to two workshops about fundamental questions of science and humanities this summer term:
08 April: Basic positions in the philosophy of science (in German)
24 April: Interdisciplinary competence for humanities scholars, social scientists and natural scientists (in German)
In dialogue with doctoral candidates and postdocs of other subject areas, you may here reflect on aims and methods of science and humanities and also take a look at fundaments of your own research work from a distance. At the same time, you will receive insights into other disciplines, you will gain an advanced apprehension for their ways of thinking and thereby train your interdisciplinary competence.

One of the major challenges of working on a PhD project over some years is to set targets for yourself, to structure your time and working tasks and to motivate yourself again and again. Why stay alone with that challenge?
The Graduate Academy is organising together with the DR.FSU a joint program for those who want to talk about their PhD process and situation with other PhD candidates on a regular basis. In a tandem or small group you can meet independently and discuss your work progress, difficulties and working situation.
There will be a kick-off workshop for these PhD tandems and small groups on 29 April. Further information and the online registration at the study programme you can find here.

With the support of Stiftung Mercator, the Graduate Academy is developing a Germany-wide unique concept for further qualifications for the field of „fundamental questions of science and humanities“. The idea behind this is to encourage young researchers to emerge from their scientific specialization, to reflect on the basics of their own culture of subject and to train their scientific foresight by maintaining an interdisciplinary dialogue.
After having started the pilot phase with a few workshops this winter term, the development of a seminar module is now planned. Concerning the further development we are dependent on the impulses and feedbacks from the different disciplines and status groups. What do young researchers want? Where does involvement with fundamental questions of science and humanities already take place at everyday work? Which topics and questions are relevant?
We would like to discuss these questions with you and therefore invite you to a workshop on 14 April from 6 – 8 pm. The agenda can be found here.

5th career fair will take place in the foyer of
campus at the Abbe Platz on 15 May from 10 am till 3 pm.
Students and graduates will be able to meet companies to
talk about internships, employment opportunities or
writing their final thesis. In addition, you can
participate in related activities like an application
training.
On 02 July the Service Centre for Research and Transfer will be hosting an information session of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The session focuses on funding opportunities of DFG, which young researchers can use depending on their qualification and ideas to start research projects or their own research group. The session will take place at the small Rosensaal from 14:30 h till 16:30 h. It will be held in German.

The
Ernst-Abbe-Stiftung
is awarding PhD scholarships at Thuringian universities for the
second time. The scholarships that fund doctoral candidates for
a period of two years amount to 1,200 Euro per month. An
extension of one year is possible. Applications for these
scholarships are only possible through the Graduate Academy.
Application deadline is on 14.04.2014. Further information can

[top]The Academy of non-profit sciences in Erfurt (Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften) is tendering two prizes for young researchers: the “Dalberg prize 2014 for transdisciplinary research” and the “Reichart prize 2014 – Erfurt’s prize for applied science”. Boths prizes include prize money of 2,000 Euro. You may apply until 30 June (Dalberg prize) or until 30 April 2014 (Reichart prize). The tenders can be found here.
After the great success of the first regulars’ table for PhD-students, this meeting will now take place monthly. Doctoral researchers of all faculties can meet in relaxed atmosphere to socialize and discuss PhD-related and interdisciplinary topics. Next regulars’ table: 9th of April, 2014, 8 pm, Grünowski.
After the elections is before the elections: Since the elections for the first term of the DR.FSU were done exceptionally in October 2013, the elections for the next term (1st of October, 2014 until 31st of September, 2015) will be held soon. Candidates can submit their nominations to the elective office of the FSU from the 7th of April to the 5th of May, 2014. Interested doctoral researchers are invited to visit the next meeting of the DR.FSU on the 7th of April in the Auditorium of the House for young Researchers (Johannisstr. 13).
