- Last November, the University of Jena organised an
online science policy conference on "Tenure Track".
The videos of this conference are now online. Anyone
who wants to find out how the German academic system
might be restructured in future can watch these
videos here.
For a general overview of the topic and the
conference, see a conference summary on Alma
Meta. The videos and the summary are in
German.
- What is the pandemic's impact on the science
system? At the moment, new statements are
coming in almost daily from science policy
organisations: First came the OECD, which noted
that a lot of funding went into Corona research,
leaving much less for other important areas of
research. Next came the German Science Council,
which sees 10
challenges for the science system and wants to
strengthen the resilience of the system in view of
the pandemic. They were joined by the German
Rectors' Conference, which sees the careers
of young researchers threatened due to the
fact that they are in qualification phases for
longer periods of time, and pleads for a fairer
performance evaluation in future recruitment
decisions.

- Friedrich Schiller University Jena is being
supported by the EU to create a „European Campus“.
Within the new project "European
Campus of City-Universities", the
University of Jena is linked to six other European
universities with long traditions: Coimbra
(Portugal), Iași (Romania), Pavia (Italy), Poitiers
(France), Salamanca (Spain) und Turku (Finland). The
aim of the alliance is to create an innovative space
that enables free mobility between the seven
universities and their cities.
- In the portrait series "Women
in Science", 72 female professors from
Jena present their scientific career paths in short
interviews (in German). The series was created as
part of the "Women in Science" project launched in
2011 to provide young female scientists with highly
visible and approachable role models. The portraits
show that the path to professorship can be mastered
with passion, self-confidence and determination –
but also that there is not one single path, but a
great variety of career paths and detours to
professorship.
