A
new career path in Germany: Tenure-Track-Conference
2020 analyses status quo and initiates new task forces
Starting in 2017, the Tenure Track Programme of the
German Government and the Lander Bundes set an
important impulse for a nationwide promotion of Tenure
Track as an additional path towards a professoral career
in the German academic System. Tenure track is widely
regarded as having the potential to lowe the academic
entrance age for professorship, thus dusting off the
general image of the old, wise scientist professor.
Nevertheless, Tenure Track has been around in the German
academic system for a while. Will it have the potentioal
to ignite further reformation of the German academic
career system? What are the current perks and pitfalls
of tenure track professorships? This past 29 and 30
September, a scientific conference Tenure
Track Tagung 2020 on a national scale
brought together academics, science managers, and
politicians, to discuss the status quo and future of
Tenure Track. It was organised by five German
Universities, Jena being amongst them, and the
German U15.
An important intermediate result of the conference has
been the founding of different nationwide expert
task forces. They will start an exchange over
different topics like quality assurance in tenure track
appointment procedures, qualification issues, or the
possible developments of the academic staff system in
general, and are planning to issue out several
publications.
Hear the press covering
of the conference by "DLF Campus und Karriere"
(German), and get a deeper insight into the
conference's topics and the task forces here
(German).
